CLEAN COAST COALITION

Taking action to make our community a beautiful and healthy place for all who inhabit it

Seaside Sustainability and Keep Massachusetts Beautiful are both 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations rooted in the same goal: taking action to make our communities a beautiful and healthy place for all who inhabit them!

We have come together under our partnership, Clean Coast Coalition, to address the marine debris problem along New England coastlines through action and education.

Who Are We?

What is Seaside Sustainability?

Seaside Sustainability is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is passionate about ocean and beach well-being and education through tangible action. Embracing a mission of preservation and protection, we dedicate ourselves to safeguarding the world's oceans, seas, wetlands, and communities. Our approach involves educating the public on sustainable practices and offering actionable guidance, fostering a collective spirit of responsibility and empowerment.

What is Keep Massachusetts Beautiful?

Keep Massachusetts Beautiful, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, envisions a pristine, green, and litter-free Massachusetts. Their mission centers on actively transforming the state into a cleaner, greener environment for residents, workers, and recreational activities. Emphasizing the crucial concept that "beauty matters," the organization tackles litter-related issues to enhance the landscape. The mission prioritizes action, engaging communities through cleanups and beautification projects, while also urging local leaders to play a proactive role. Keep Massachusetts Beautiful focuses on four key impact areas: Litter Prevention & Cleanup, Waste Reduction & Recycling, Beautification & Community Greening, and Environmental Education. By mobilizing volunteers and collaborating with government and business leaders, they strive to achieve lasting improvements and inspire positive environmental behaviors.

Clean Coast Coalition’s goal is to improve local water-based ecosystems through the use of the PixieDrone and other “BlueTech” devices like the BeBot. This remote-controlled aqua-drone conducts water quality testing, records and transmits live footage, and filters debris and invasive fauna out of the water to be separated into four categories; trash, compostables, plastics, and other recyclables. Removing this water-based debris creates a safer and more enjoyable environment for marine organisms and humans alike.

Clean Coast Coalition will use this BlueTech device to not only reduce the amount of harmful debris in local waters, but also to educate the local community about the dangers of litter and marine debris in their environment. Through the collection of water quality data, camera footage, and the debris retrieved by the device, we aim to raise awareness and inspire local residents to prevent debris from entering local waterways in the first place.

About

Benefits of a PixieDrone Event

Commercial vs. Consumer Debris

Partnering with a community group of both adults and students, sponsored PixieDrone events can help locals identify strategic locations within the community that would greatly benefit from the drone's operation. We will collaborate with local press to cover the event, emphasizing the PixieDrone's capabilities with live coverage. Organizing an event with the PixieDrone offers a multifaceted approach to environmental impact, community engagement, and education. The PixieDrone's advanced capabilities include live footage recording and debris filtration, providing real-time insights and contributing significantly to water-based debris cleanup. This presents a unique educational opportunity to shed light on marine debris issues, addressing their sources, causes, and origins. We plan to engage participants in discussions about the impact of single-use plastics, presenting relevant statistics and advocating for sustainable alternatives. By intertwining hands-on PixieDrone operation with informative sessions, we aim to empower ordinary citizens with actionable solutions to reduce debris in their communities and foster a heightened sense of connection to our oceans.

Commercial and consumer debris represent distinct but interconnected facets of the broader issue of marine pollution. Commercial debris often originates from industrial activities, shipping cargo, and fishing operations, contributing to large-scale waste such as abandoned fishing gear or cargo. Alternatively, consumer debris encompasses the improper disposal of plastic bottles, packaging, and single use plastics, often originating from individual habits or poor waste management. Both forms of debris pose significant threats to marine ecosystems, and addressing this complex challenge requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the sources, management, and reduction of both commercial and consumer debris to promote a healthier and more sustainable marine environment.

Future Projects... Stay Tuned!

BeBot

Along with the PixieDrone, Clean Coast Coalition is raising funds to obtain other Searial Cleaner devices, such as the BeBot. The BeBot works on land, operated by remote control to screen sand, rake seaweed, level out beaches, and carry waste away. The device is quiet while also making its presence known, making it safe to use when people and animals may be present. It does not harm plants or animals that are in the sand being screened, but is able to remove any debris buried in the sand.

Collec'Thor

The Collec’Thor is installed at the water’s edge and/or on floating docks in areas where marine waste routes have been identified. Collec’Thor attracts and collects all solid and liquid waste floating on the water’s surface. It operates continuously and silently, attracting waste over a large area. The Collec’Thor is highly ergonomic and has no waste bag. It has easy waist-level emptying and cleaning, and a handle system for easy maintenance. The Clean Coast Coalition is looking to use this device as another method of clearing litter out of the water.
