FIELD TRIP ACTIVITIES
Get out and up close to science you can touch!

European Green Crabs
Invasive species can wreak havoc on the environment. Learn about the invasive crab and its impact on the coastal ecosystem.

Seabin
Ensuing we collect floating debris before it breaks up into smaller pieces or sinks to the seafloor is a team effort. Visit the ocean cleaning device connected to the doc sucking out marine debris.

PixieDrone
Marine debris has major effects on our bodies and the greater ecosystem. Get behind the remote to operate our water surface drone used to collect floating marine debris before it breaks up and sinks.

Sea Level Rise Activity
Sea levels are rising due to climate change which is leading to increasingly warmer annual temperatures. Learn how to monitor sea level rise in when storm surge impacts a coastline using basic tools.

Nurdle Patrol
Little plastic beads generally considered virgin plastic are found in masse all over the globe. Visit our nurdle site to learn about their presence, motion and impacts.

Coastal Cleanup
Reducing the amount of debris on our shores to limit pollution and threats to wildlife is a group effort. Engage in a short cleanup and learn about the marine debris issue.

Eco Reef-Safe Sunscreen
“Regular” sunscreen is loaded with chemicals and is really bad for the ocean, let alone your body. Visit a dispenser to learn how sunscreen impacts marine life.

Tide Pools
Found in intertidal shores during low tide, tide pools are teeming with a variety of organisms. Enjoy hands-on exploration identifying flora and fauna while learning about species native to Cape Ann.

FiFish Robot
Under the water is fun and exciting to explore. Learn to operate our underwater drone used to explore the seafloor.

Beach Seining
Explore what biodiversity exists in the near shore environment. Learn one of the oldest fishing practices, “seining,” which involves pulling nets through shallow water to discover various species of marine life.

Horseshoe Crab Tagging
Do you know how important and valuable the blood of a horseshoe crab is? Learn about Seaside’s Horseshoe crab tagging program and the sponsorship behind the work!

Single Use Plastic Legislation "Talk"
Seaside is a leader in many bans for dozens of municipalities around the world. Did you know that we wrote the legislation for one of the most comprehensive bans in the country?!

"Trash Talk"
Did you know that the marine debris crisis has surpassed epic proportions? Learn about the challenges of marine debris and how it impacts your body and our greater ecosystem.

Eelgrass Program "Talk"
Some sea grasses are vital to habitats and greenhouse gas sequestration. Ler about the importance of eelgrass to our ecosystems including how important it is to spawning too many little critters.

Boat Shrinkwrap "Talk"
When boats go to sleep for the winter, they get wrapped in thick hard to recycle shrink wrap.. Learn about Seaside’s wrap recycle program keeping tons of wrap out of the waste stream.

Marine Debris Trawl "Talk"
When you go to the beach or to the coast, be sure to look around and notice what is floating sunken, washed ashore. Learn all about marine debris and how it impacts your body and the ecosystem around the earth.

Post Field Trip Actions "Talk"
Engage in a discussion on actions that all participants can take at their homes, schools and communities to be a better steward of our valuable environment.

Microplastics in Sand, Soil, & Water
Microplastics are everywhere (your body consumes more than 2 credit cards worth plastics a month). Test sand, soil, and water substrates for presence of microplastics.

Mudflat Acidification Testing
The ocean is the largest CO2 sequester on earth. Coastal mud is right behind trees as a powerful sequester of these greenhouse gasses. Conduct testing and learn about CO2 sequestration.

Marine Trash Skimmer
Another device similar to the Seabin is charged with sucking out floating marine debris from the ocean. Visit this ocean cleaning device connected to the dock seeing all that it has in its stomach.

Compotables in the Marine Environment
How do “compostable plastics” degrade in the ocean? Do they actually degrade? Visit a cage with several products breaking down in the ocean and learn all about that growing industry.
Our unique activities engage participants through hands-on STEM engagement promoting environmental conservation and stewardship that impact our local communities and the world beyond.
Please note that these activities are offered May through October.
Your group will be guided by knowledgeable and experienced members of the Seaside Sustainability team to ensure your trip is conducted in a safe, fun and meaningful manner.
