This week we want to take a minute to acknowledge Nate McMullen!
Nate is a senior at Emory University majoring in Environmental Sciences and minoring in English. Growing up in the small town of Payson, Arizona instilled Nate with a love of the outdoors from a young age, and he was excited to direct those passions into an internship in the green field. In his free time, Nate enjoys hiking, reading, and playing sports.
He chose to work with Seaside Sustainability because of its educational emphasis. As someone with a love and appreciation for the outdoors he wanted to learn more about how human activity impacts the Earth. He had very little prior academic experience with oceans, so Nate was excited to learn more about marine environmental issues and how we might remedy them. Seaside Sustainability's "education through action" approach in particular stood out to him as a worthwhile and effective strategy to address problems now and in the future.
As an intern, Nate has contributed to both the marketing team and the grants team at Seaside combining his writing skills and science background. He has most enjoyed getting to know his fellow interns. He has appreciated connecting with peers from across the country and the world, especially in COVID times. Working here has meant meeting a diverse group of people that wouldn’t be possible without the remote work that connects people from such distant places.
Nate hasn’t made any concrete plans for his future, but what he knows for sure is that he wants to continue to make a difference. His time at Seaside Sustainability has provided invaluable experience in the environmental field, and he hopes to use the skills he has learned here in his future career. Thank you for all of your hard work Nate! The entire team at Seaside Sustainability is excited to see where your new skills take you.
